Fine Pair of Early George 111 Antique Silver Large Sauce boats of tall oval form, gadrooned rims, the scrolling back with leaf capped flying scroll handles, the fronts with Armorial engraving, on shaped oval pedestal foot. The Pair were made in 1770 by Daniel Smith and Robert Sharp in London. The height of each is 18.5 cms to the highest point. The length of each is 18 cms. The total weight of the pair is 34.3 Troy ozs.
The armorial presented here as two family arms emparlee, relates to the marriage in 1771 of Edward Wakefield ( 1749 – 1832 ) and Priscilla Bell ( 1750 – 1832 ). Both were buried at Ipswich. Priscilla Wakefield nee Bell was from a quaker family, her paternal ancestry shows her to be a descendant of the Barclay family of later banking fame. She was a writer and social reformer, abolitionist of slavery, founder of the later National Savings Bank and a feminist. Her niece was the Elizabeth Fry.
